NEARLY one out of two women would rather give up sex for two weeks than go without the internet, according to a survey released today.
Far fewer men would choose to go without sex, according to the survey of 2119 adults carried out by the online research firm Harris Interactive and sponsored by Intel Corp, the world's biggest computer chip maker.
Forty-six per cent of the women polled said they would rather go without sex for two weeks than give up access to the internet for the same period of time, according to the survey, Internet Reliance in Today's Economy.
Only 30 per cent of men said they would rather forgo intimate relations than cyber ones.
Ninety-five per cent of those surveyed said it is "very important, important or somewhat important" to be able to access the internet.
Sixty-five per cent of those surveyed rated internet access above other discretionary spending items such as cable television subscriptions (39 per cent), dining out (20 per cent), shopping for clothes (18 per cent) or a health club membership (10 per cent). |

A man used computers at a Sunshine Coast public library to download thousands of pornographic images and movies of children aged four to 15.
Nicholas Charles Pinner, 34, was sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty yesterday to possessing child exploitation material he obtained from Maroochydore Library computers.
He will be eligible for parole after six months.
Mr Pinner had 489 movies and 2104 images of children being assaulted by adults, which he accessed at the library and internet cafes to avoid detection by authorities.
Maroochydore District Court heard he would use text-based searches on peer-to-peer file sharing program Limewire to locate files, save them to a USB memory stick and then download the actual images and movies on his home computer.
Crown legal officer Patricia Stein said some files showed bondage of children being abused, children “in obvious pain” and acts with animals.
She said some movie files were edited to remove “non-eventful” parts and set to techno music.
“He sought material which had shock value,” she said.
“Accordingly, his actions (increase the) gravity of abuse of children to meet such desires.”
Police seized Mr Pinner’s computer after receiving a call from a repair shop.
After a search of Mr Pinner’s home, they also seized an external hard drive, USB memory stick, MP3 player and DVDs with child porn.
Mr Pinner told police he started off with adult pornography but moved to children when that “got a bit dull” and he wanted more “shocking” images.
The court heard Mr Pinner, a medium-built red-head who was gulping nervously throughout the sentence, had been diagnosed as a paedophile and had a cannabis dependency.
Judge John Robertson said the offending was “reasonably sophisticated” given Mr Pinner’s methods to avoid detection.
“In my view ... (these files are) certainly up there with the most serious,” he said.
Sunshine Coast central libraries team leader Ross Duncan said the library took immediate steps to ban Mr Pinner from the nine libraries.
He said the council was investigating what further steps could be taken to limit access to Limewire and other peer-to-peer sharing networks.
But Mr Duncan said the libraries, which do not have filtering software in line with the State Library of Queensland, aimed to bridge the digital divide and filtering was “hit and miss”.
“You can either filter by site names which is difficult because they change all the time or by content which is tricky because it limits access to appropriate content,” he said.
“The approach that libraries have traditionally taken, including the Sunshine Coast, is more of a passive monitoring of the people’s access.
“We place the computers in prominent well-lit locations and all together.” |

The industry body representing Queensland adult shops says a proposal to ban new sex shops from opening within 200m of schools and churches misses the mark.
Deputy premier Paul Lucas said the government hoped to have draft planning regulations to stop new adult shops opening near “sensitive uses” drawn up by March.
Mr Lucas said adult stores were legitimate businesses, but he understood why parents would not want one in a school environment.
But Eros Association chief Fiona Patten said the law was meaningless without improved censorship.
Ms Patten said Queensland needed to follow other states and regulate legal adult material rather than ban it.
She said children could legally enter adult shops, because under Queensland law, there were no restricted products in them.
“What is the point in making sure adult shops are 200 metres from schools when school children can legally enter the premises?” Ms Patten said.
Mr Lucas stood by Queensland’s stance on adult material, saying it was “the toughest in Australia”.
A Sunshine Coast Regional Council spokeswoman said applications for adult shops on the Sunshine Coast were still considered using guidelines set out by the former Maroochy, Noosa and Caloundra councils.
She said there were no special requirements that applicants wanting to start adult shops in the old Noosa shire needed to meet.
People wanting to start shops in the Maroochy and Caloundra shires needed to advertise and give people an opportunity make submissions which needed to be handed to the council, she said.
"Planners believe the new proposed regulation will impact on the way they assess such applications under the current three planning schemes," the spokeswoman said.
"However, to what extent is still to be considered.
She said work towards a regional planning scheme was already underway and a draft could be expected this year.
An adult shop in Caloundra's main street remained open in October while the council processed its business application despite the business's location being in violation of the town plan.

A SELF-CONFESSED "jealous wife" who allegedly murdered her husband by torching his genitals told neighbours "his penis should belong to me", a court has heard.
Prosecutors today told the Adelaide Magistrates Court that Rajini Narayan should not be released on bail without an extensive psychological assessment, Adelaide Now reports.
Lucy Boord, for the Crown, said the 44-year-old had confessed to neighbours that she had set her engineer husband, Satish, alight upon learning he was having an affair.
"She told neighbours 'my husband loves another woman, he hugs her'," she said.
"(She said) 'I'm a jealous wife, his penis should belong to me, I just wanted to burn his penis so it belongs to me and no one else.
"(She said) 'It's just his penis I wanted to burn, I didn't mean this to happen."
Narayan was originally charged with endangering life and arson offences over the incident at Unley in December.
Prosecutors had alleged Satish was asleep when his wife doused his genitals with methylated spirit and then set him on fire.
A blaze was sparked when he jumped out of bed and knocked over the bottle of spirit, causing $1 million damage to their Cleland Ave townhouse and an adjacent property.
Today, Ms Boord said the charges against Narayan had been upgraded to murder.
"She poses a substantial risk to others given her flagrant offending," she said.
"Witnesses also heard the accused make references to using a police officer's gun on herself, and references to whether she should be alive at all."
Ms Boord said psychological reports filed with the court were out of date, as they did not address Narayan's reaction to the new charge.
Magistrate Bill Ackland ordered a new report, and remanded Narayan in custody until Friday. |
